S1E6 - Prof Andrew Fraknoi - Fromm and Osher Institutes - “The Real World is Magic Enough”

Andrew Fraknoi is an award-winning scientist and educator, known for his skill in interpreting astronomical discoveries and ideas in everyday language. Fraknoi retired in 2017 as the Chair of the Astronomy Department at Foothill College, and now teaches introductory astronomy and physics at the Fromm Institute of the University of San Francisco and through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at San Francisco State University.

Fraknoi serves on the Board of Trustees of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute, a scientific and educational organization where he was a founding trustee in 1984. He is an elected Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences, and holds numerous other prestigious positions and awards.

He is the lead author of the most frequently used basic astronomy textbook in the country, Astronomy, published online by the nonprofit OpenStax project at Rice University.  In retirement, he has also been writing science fiction stories based on good astronomy, with five published so far.  See: http://fraknoi.com/ for more information about his work or to read his science fiction.
